EU 6: Detection and formation of planetary systems

This is an astrophysical course which has both an observational part and a theoretical part. The fist 4 lectures will present the theories of formation and evolution of planetary systems. The 5 last lectures will present detection methods of extrasolar planets and an overview of the systems that have been detected so far.

- The Oort cloud
- Young planetary systems and debri disks

- Tidal interaction between a forming planet and the protoplanetary disk. Orbital migration.

- Detection of extrasolar planets: direct methods
- Presentation of the problem and choice of the spectral domain
- Imaging in visible and near IR
- Interferometry
- Direct detection of polar radio emissions from giant exoplanets

- Observation of planetary atmospheres

- Detection of extrasolar planets: indirect methods (1)
- Gravitational microlensing
- Pulsar timing
- Astrometry
- Photometric and spectroscopic transits
- Reflected light
- Radial velocity

- Detection of extrasolar planets: indirect methods (2)

- Observation of extrasolar planets: statistics
- Mass distribution
- Orbital elements distribution
- Characteristics of stars with planets
- Mass-radius relationship

Lectures take place Wednesday mornings at the Institut d’Astrophysique de Paris.
